Discovery Community Church, affiliated with the BC Mennonite Brethren Conference, is in the process of seeking a Lead Pastor. As a congregation, we are in continual prayer for God to send us His servant to lead us in our church mission of “Introducing people to Jesus Christ”.
Discovery Community Church has been part of the fabric of Campbell River since 1987. Our congregation consists of people from many denominational backgrounds knit together with a love for Jesus. Weekly attendance currently runs around 100 to 120, with a predominance of attendees in the 50+ age range, however, we have a strong desire to see growth in attendance of the younger generation. Our church does have some ethnic diversity and we anticipate this growing in future years. We’re located in the heart of downtown Campbell River and meet in our own building that was previously a two-theatre cinema.
We currently have in place a transitional pastor who is providing wisdom and guidance to our congregation and the transitional leadership team. They are assisting us in the calling of a new Lead Pastor.
Often referred to as the “Salmon Capital of the World”, Campbell River is located on the edge of Discovery Passage, halfway between Victoria and Port Hardy. Campbell River is the gateway and maritime centre for North Vancouver Island. For the outdoor enthusiast Campbell River offers a smorgasbord of activities such as golfing, skiing, hiking, walking trails (including a magnificent oceanfront walkway), fishing, hunting, and much more.
The population of Campbell River is approximately 35,000 and we are the hub and service centre for about 60,000 people living in our region.
Because of the natural beauty of our area, the temperate climate, and housing affordability, Campbell River is attracting many early retirees from other provinces and the lower mainland of British Columbia.
What kind of Lead Pastor are we looking for? In listening to God’s voice and seeking His guidance, our Search Team has invited our church family into this spiritual journey. We have taken time to engage the congregation with a church-wide survey as well as various Focus Groups. As we have prayed, listened to the Lord and to one another, we believe the Lord is leading us to call someone who reflects these qualities:
*A Spirit-filled leader who is in love with Jesus, with a passion to help people of all ages, to know and follow Jesus. As part of that, he would fulfill the attributes of a leader outlined in Scripture in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9 & 1 Peter 5:1-4
*A Christ follower, in agreement with our Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith and whose life is lived in accordance with the teaching of the Word of God as the final authority for his life and for ours.
*A person passionate about the timeless truths of Scripture with ability to preach well and engage listeners of all ages. Someone with the ability to both exegete the Word and speak biblically to current issues.
*A man committed to the centrality of Christ, the authority of the Word of God, and a heart that is responsive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
*A man with a relational, engaging, and energetic approach to preaching.
*A man with the ability to relate and connect well with people of all ages especially youth and young adults.
*An emotionally healthy person with a secure sense of personal identity and whose life is balanced – with his family, his marriage, and the church.
*A leader amongst leaders who enjoys working collaboratively within the church leadership structure.
*A strong leadership gifting, suitable ministry experience, and ministry maturity, with a proven ability to counsel, inspire, and nurture leaders.
*A person committed to equip, mobilize, and release others to do the work of ministry; a leader who champions and affirms others to step into their God-given, God-called vision.
*A man with a clear call for Discovery Community Church and a missional heart for the unique opportunities in our city and this region.
The position will remain open until the right person is identified.
